Checked against TSBPE records
A Journeyman Plumber has finished their apprenticeship and can take on general plumbing work under a Responsible Master Plumber's supervision, while also being senior enough to supervise apprentices and tradesmen themselves. It's the most common working plumber's license in Texas — the card most residential and commercial plumbing crews actually run on day to day. Homeowners and GCs checking this number want confirmation the plumber on-site is genuinely licensed, not just experienced. Because TSBPE ties so much to keeping this license active, a lapse can affect more than just the individual — it can leave a crew short-handed on licensed hands.
Journeyman Plumber licenses renew every year, and TSBPE requires 6 hours of continuing professional education (CPE) each cycle. A late renewal costs $20 within 90 days of expiration and $40 beyond that. TSBPE draws a hard line at two years: unlike TDLR's trade licenses, which typically allow a three-year grace window before requiring a brand-new application, a Journeyman Plumber license expired more than two years cannot be renewed at all — the plumber has to reinstate by re-registering as a Plumber's Apprentice and passing every exam the license currently requires. That's a real step backward professionally, which is why most journeymen treat the annual renewal date as a hard deadline, not a suggestion.
Renewal facts — TSBPE
- Renewal cycle
- Every year.
- Continuing education
- 6 hours of continuing professional education (CPE) per cycle.
- If it lapses
- $20 late fee within 90 days, $40 beyond that — and TSBPE's 2-year cutoff means anything expired longer than that requires full reinstatement: re-registering as an Apprentice and passing all current exams again.
