Checked against TSBPE records

Master Plumber is the top individual plumbing license TSBPE issues — the credential that lets someone pull permits, take on plumbing jobs directly, and supervise apprentices and journeymen. Most Master Plumbers either run their own plumbing company or serve as the Responsible Master Plumber backing one, so this license effectively underwrites a business's ability to operate. Homeowners, GCs, and inspectors treat the number as proof that whoever signed off on a job was actually qualified to do so. Because TSBPE runs a noticeably less forgiving reinstatement process than TDLR's trade programs, Master Plumbers have real reason to renew well ahead of the deadline.

The license renews every year, and TSBPE requires 6 hours of continuing professional education (CPE) per cycle to keep it active. Renewing late costs $37.50 if it's within 90 days of expiration and $75 beyond that. The real cliff comes at two years: TSBPE's rules are explicit that a license expired more than two years can no longer be renewed at all — it has to be reinstated, which means re-registering as a Plumber's Apprentice and passing every exam required for the license all over again. That's a considerably harder landing than the three-year window and 'new applicant' language TDLR uses for electricians and HVAC techs — TSBPE spells out the word 'reinstatement' on purpose.
